Wonderful Waders

Stunning wading birds on their migration to Africa

Late summer

August marks the start of wader migration with the opportunity to see these birds as they stop off to refuel on their journey south for the winter. We'll use slow motion to capture these elegant and enigmatic birds and observe their individual behaviour and feeding strategies.

Ruff, Lapwing, Dunlin, Spotted Redshank and Curlew Sandpiper

The wildlife experience

Wading birds make elegant but challenging subjects for photography. We'll explore techniques to capture their beauty early in slow-motion, revealing their graceful movements, behaviour and feeding strategies. Framing is all important so we'll have one eye on our subjects and another on their environment, with the opportunity to capture ripples and reflections in the water. We'll aim to film species such as Ruff, Curlew Sandpiper, Spotted Redshank, Greenshank, Dunlin and many more. With luck we'll be treated to adult birds that are still showing glorious breeding plumage and buff coloured juveniles. Other birds we have a good chance of seeing, and possibly filming, include: Marsh Harrier, Bearded Tit, Yellow Wagtail, Spoonbills and Water Rail.

After a good session of filming we'll take a break and begin the process of reviewing the footage you've shot. I'll guide you through an approach to selecting your best film clips and then building them into a narrative and an eye catching short film. I'll send you the finished edit of your wader movie at the end of the day.

Throughout the experience I'll be on hand to provide my guidance and expertise for filming and editing. I'll take care of the technical aspects of using the kit, so you can concentrate on enjoying the wildlife and capturing some great footage.

As with all Film Nature experiences, we'll take things at an easy pace. It will be an opportunity to enjoy our wonderful British wildlife in a relaxed and fun environment.

This experience will suit anyone interested in filming wildlife. You don't need any prior film making or bird watching expertise to enjoy this day.
