Bohemian Waxwings

A genuine winter wildlife spectacle: the Waxwing, or "Waxen Chatterer"

Winter

An opportunity to watch and film these stunning winter visitors from Scandinavia. On this special Film Nature experience we'll track down flocks of these scarce birds and get shots of them feeding on their favourite food - berries! These experiences won't be advertised in advance, so please contact us if you'd like to arrange a Waxwing day with us.

The wildlife experience

This is special chance to film these scarce winter visitors from Scandinavia. We'll seek out small flocks of these birds with the aim of filming their various behvaiours and capturing their gregarious and charming character. We'll shoot them perching at the tops of trees and flying down to gorge themselves on berry laden bushes. If the opportunity arises we'll also attemp to capture them fly catching in slow motion.

After a good session of filming we'll take a break and begin the process of reviewing the footage you've shot. I'll guide you through an approach to selecting your best film clips and then building them into a narrative and an eye catching short film. I'll send you the finished edit of your Waxwing movie at the end of the day.

Throughout the experience I'll be on hand to provide my guidance and expertise for filming and editing. I'll take care of the technical aspects of using the kit, so you can concentrate on enjoying the wildlife and capturing amazing shots of these beautiful birds.

As with all Film Nature experiences, we'll take things at an easy pace. It will be an opportunity to enjoy our wonderful British wildlife in a relaxed and fun environment.

This experience will suit anyone interested in filming wildlife. You don't need any prior film making or bird watching expertise to enjoy this day.

The numbers of Waxwings visiting the UK fluctuate significantly from year to year. Some years they are very scarce, but in "iruption" years they can arrive on our shores in far greater numbers. It's therefore impossible to schedule these experiences well in advance. Instead, if you're interested in seeing and filming them, please get in touch by email and we'll let you if and when there are opportunities. The most likely months for Waxwing opportunities are between November and March.

What you need to bring

  • Wellies/boots - paths can be muddy

  • Waterproof and warm clothing - there may be some waiting around for the birds to show well, so plenty of layers are recommended

  • Binoculars if you have them

  • Face mask and hand gel if needed

  • Packed lunch

  • Drinks

Location and timings

  • We'll most likely start early in the morning. The location will be arranged with you, depending on where birds can found. We may be out in the countryside, or alternatively in urban locations where there are often food sources that attract Waxwings

  • We'll aim to finish by around 14:00, but if the opportunities to film are good and the weather is kind we may stay out longer

Nature and the weather can be unpredictable

  • Please note that this experience may be cancelled at short notice if necessary. If the weather forecast is looking poor, we will not go ahead

  • This experience is highly dependent on access to the birds we will film. These are wild birds at the mercy of the rest of the ecosystem. Please be aware that we may need to reschedule the dates at short notice, or seek out alternative species to film

  • Always check for email or SMS updates the night before an experience, and if you'd like to get in touch at any point please do so

  • If we are unable to proceed for any reason, Film Nature will offer alternative dates and/or experiences. In the event of a complete washout we can offer priority booking for next year!
